Acts of Kindness - A Stranger Paid my Fare

I stepped into this Thanksgiving morning with a soft grin, a warm cup and a silent prayer that my stomach behave itself today. I told it kindly. “ please don’t rumble like you vex and push me to my throne under duress. Not today”

And with the negotiation out of the way, I let the aura of Thanksgiving settle around me.

I see small gestures from people whose hearts still allow light in- tiny reminders that goodness still wanders this world, even if it shows up late and the folks it’s bestowed upon treat it like a distant, almost suspicious gesture.

Just last evening, on my commute home, I witnessed one of those rare moments. A young lady- I wish I had her name stepped of the little minivan we were all riding in. Six of us remained inside. Before leaving, she turned back, reached into  her purple leather clutch and paid the driver and utter to us our fares was paid.

We belted out our thanks like a small choir.

But here’s where it stung my spirit a little… As the others got off the van, they still stretched out their hands and paid the driver anyway, as if refusing to receive kindness from a perfect stranger- in the season of giving thanks no less.

People will reject generosity when they don’t know how to receive it.

Some hearts have been mishandled so long that even grace looks suspicious.

And here I’m this morning- happily tucked in the midst of my vanilla, plum, oak-wood candle flickering,  crafting, creating, savoring my solitude.

No fuss,

No noise.

No unexpected guests ringing my bell like they’re the ghost of mashed potatoes past.

Today is simple, warm and honest. My spirit is sound my mind is steady and let me be clear I am definitely not looking to be found.

if you catch me chowing down on some slow cooked goodness, just know that I prayed for the food to peacefully glide down my middle passage.
